RESUMO

Introduction: Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is associated with positive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes, including increased contraceptive use, lower rates of unintended pregnancy and prevention of sexual violence. However, implementation of and requirements for CSE vary across the United States which can negatively impact students, both during and beyond high school, including among college students. Methods: and Analysis: This paper describes the research protocol for a multi-staged approach for designing, implementing and evaluating an SRH course for up to 60 undergraduate students at a public university in California. Before the class is offered, we will conduct 20 in-depth interviews with current students, educators and course design experts to learn from their experiences and seek their guidance on course design. To evaluate the course, enrolled students will complete a pre-course and a post-course survey before and after class is taught, to assess students' attitudes and values relevant to educational concepts and the format and delivery of the course and its modules and activities. Approximately 20 students will take part in an in-depth exit interview, after completing the course, to gather perceptions about how the course impacted their knowledge and behavior. The goal is to refine materials for future in-person course offerings and develop a prototype for a fully online version of the course. Discussion: This study introduces a novel university-level course to provide young adult students comprehensive, evidence-based education on sexual and reproductive health from a public health perspective. The program leverages existing CSE efforts, enhancing them with academic rigor, inclusive content and digital inclusion. This approach, inclusive of diverse sexual orientations, content on pleasure and sexual violence prevention, aims to fill existing gaps in university curricula and also set a new standard in CSE. The project's innovative and multidisciplinary design offers a model for broader impact within a large public university system and beyond.

RESUMO

At the beginning of the 2000s the Austrian public universities were characterized by staffing rigidities, little competitive research, outdated study curricula and free access to all fields of study, the latter combined with high dropout rates and long study durations. As a countermeasure the universities were granted full legal capacity. For new employees the status of civil servants was herewith cancelled and, being now subject to the Employment Act, tenured employments for anyone who wanted to stay at the university were no longer possible. Medical faculties always had special provisions which would be difficult to reconcile with the full legal capacity of the universities: (i) the requirements of the hospitals affiliated to universities for research and teaching in addition to patient care had to be reimbursed to the Austrian federal states maintaining the hospitals, (ii) the physicians of university-affiliated hospitals were largely employed by the respective university and (iii) to ensure financing of clinical research and teaching at the hospital, the medical faculties received a budget separated from the rest of the university. As it was neither politically possible nor foreseeable that universities would be able to form a subcorporation with the affiliated hospital (integration model) or at least a close cooperation with the hospital if that has legal capacity per se (cooperation model), the necessary budgetary sovereignty of the medical faculties could only be guaranteed by their transition to medical universities. Nonetheless, reservations about this spin-off of medicine were enormous, but quickly fell silent, as the newly established medical universities maintained close cooperations with their parent as well as other universities and achieved, for Austrian standards, favorable positions in international rankings.

RESUMO

Provision of medication abortion in student health centers is safe and effective, but no public universities in Washington state provide such services. We estimate demand for medication abortion and describe barriers to care among students at four-year public universities in Washington. Using publicly available data, we estimated that students at the 11 Washington public universities obtained between 549 and 932 medication abortions annually. Students must travel an average of 16 miles (range:1-78) or 73 minutes via public transit (range:22-284) round trip to the nearest abortion-providing facility. Average wait time for the first available appointment was 10 days (range:4-14), and average cost was $711. Public universities can play an integral role in expanding abortion access post-Dobbs by providing medication abortion, effectively reducing barriers to care for students. The state legislature can pass legislation requiring universities to provide medication abortion, similar to what other states also protective of abortion rights have done.

Abstract This research aims to capture occupational segregation and wage discrimination by gender in the University of Cauca, located in southwestern Colombia, during four periods (2005, 2010, 2015 y 2020). There are few studies in this direction, and the existing ones do not address it in depth, at least in emerging countries. In this sense, it is the first time it has been done for Colombian higher education institutions. The methodology is quantitative and it implements the Karmel and MacLachlan Index (KM) in the first case and the Kitagawa-Oaxaca-Blinder (KOB) decomposition in the second one. To deepen the analysis panel data information was used for the first time in the KOB decomposition for these issues, which allows evaluating the evolution of segregation over time. The variables analysed include gender, wage, age, years of experience, education level, administrative charges, and academic departments of origin, among others. The information used comes from the official data provided by the Administrative Office of the University of Cauca. This is characterized by being totally anonymous and by exclusively comprising full-time teachers, that is, those with an indefinite term contract. Temporal teachers and/or professors with a defined term contract are excluded, due to the volatility in the employment relationship, which would otherwise introduce noise into the analysis. In general, the information shows that alpha professions (better paid, with greater projection and public recognition) have been dominated in the last five years by professors; while beta professions (that is those with lower salaries, little projection and recognition) have been led by women. This preliminary result leads to consider that there is labor and/or wage segregation within this university. The estimates of the KM index showed, firstly, that all professions, both alpha and beta, have at least some segregation in the period analysed, since this is greater than zero. Second, segregation has been low and slightly decreasing over time for beta professions. In fact, it was 0.09 in 2005 and 0.072 in 2020. Third, for alpha professions, the index has been markedly increasing over time, which suggests that the proportion of female teachers who must change professions so that segregation from men was zero is increasing. Regarding wage discrimination, all the differences were negative, which shows that the average salaries of female teachers are lower than those of male teachers and therefore their difference is less than zero. Although the results are only statistically significant for the years 2011, 2014 and 2020, it can be highlighted that these differentials have been decreasing over time. In effect, it was -0.24 log-wage in 2005 and -0.051 log-wage in 2020. These results are partially in line with those obtained in the KM index. Occupational and salary segregation seems to have decreased slightly in recent years in this university, but it still exists. In the case of decomposition change, all the variations in the endowment are positive and significant but are characterized as decreasing, which indicates that changes in average wage differentials have been narrowing over time. The empirical evidence suggest that occupational segregation still occurs in beta professions traditionally occupied by women despite the low perception of job discrimination by university professors. As for alpha occupations, they maintain male hegemony. The observable characteristics mean that there are differences in the wage modification between male and female teachers, but this is becoming less strong due to the increase in the education level and the decrease in the number of children. There are unobserved discriminatory factors that maintain female wage discrimination in response to cultural factors rooted in the patriarchy and traditionalism of the region where the university is located.

RESUMO

Medical education is one of the most sought-after disciplines for its prestigious and noble status. Institutions endeavor to identify admissions criteria to register bright students who can handle the complexity of medical training and become competent clinicians. This study aims to apply statistical and educational data mining approaches to study the relationship between pre-admission criteria and student performance in medical programs at a public university in Saudi Arabia. The present study is a retrospective cohort study conducted at the College of Computer Science, King Khalid University, Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between February and November 2022. The current pre-admission criterion is the admission score taken as the weighted average of high school percentage (HSP), general aptitude test (GAT) and standard achievement admission test (SAAT), with respective weights of 0.3, 0.3 and 0.4. Regression and optimization techniques have been applied to identify weightages that better fit the data. Five classification techniques-Decision Tree, Neural Network, Random Forest, Naïve Bayes and K-Nearest Neighbors-are employed to develop models to predict student performance. The regression and optimization analyses show that optimized weights of HSP, GAT and SAAT are 0.3, 0.2 and 0.5, respectively. The results depict that the performance of the models improves with admission scores based on optimized weightages. Further, the Neural Network and Naïve Bayes techniques outperform other techniques. Firstly, this study proposes to revise the weights of HSP, GAT and SAAT to 0.3, 0.2 and 0.5, respectively. Secondly, as the evaluation metrics of models remain less than 0.75, this study proposes to identify additional student features for calculating admission scores to select ideal candidates for medical programs.

Abstract This research intended to understand how knowings and doings that decolonize knowledge, science and society in the scope of the UFMG are imploded, from the (auto)biographical narrative reports of three black teachers of public higher education. The experience of these teachers was taken as analyzers of the innumerable contradictions that appear in a public university of modern/colonial history. This has been able to move epistemic and political ruptures in the reinvention of a new world that is already possible despite the traps of coloniality. In this direction, the strategies to combat the colonization of the being, of knowledge and of society are a constant process of mobilization and alteration of these experiences. Only and solely, it is through this open wound that these intellectuals invent other paths in the production of knowledge, science and society itself in its fairest version towards feminist, anti-racist and decolonial experience-science.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND:  Nurses' training has been mostly face-to-face in the South African context. This mode of delivery was linked to producing nurses who are critical thinkers, problem solvers and competent in practical skills. However, the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) accelerated the need for online teaching in nursing. Nurse lecturers were forced to teach online in order to save the academic project, despite concerns about the competencies and calibre of nurses produced through online teaching. OBJECTIVES:  This study aimed to explore and describe nurse lecturers' experiences with online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic at a public university in Gauteng, South Africa. METHOD:  A qualitative, exploratory design was utilised. Six nurse lecturers - two males and four females - were purposefully selected to participate in this study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews to obtain rich, thick descriptions from the nurse lecturers who experienced online teaching. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. RESULTS:  Five themes emerged as, (1) challenges related to the learner management system; (2) challenges related to competency; (3) factors out of the span of control of the lecturer; (4) indirect benefits of online teaching; and (5) recommendations to facilitate the smooth delivery of online teaching. CONCLUSION:  The findings established that nurse lecturers experienced challenges when teaching online, which resulted in frustrations and discomfort for lecturers.Contribution: The study revealed the challenges nurse lecturers faced while teaching online. It highlights the need for nurse lecturers to be trained and supported to enhance online teaching and learning.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to identify the predictors of job stress and alcohol consumption amongst 253 professors at a public university. Previous history of psychotropic drug use, as well as the Scale of Work Stress, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, and the Self-Report Questionnaire were used. Being female, younger than 40 years of age; of homosexual orientation; a workload of weekly classes of >10 h in total; and being positive for common mental disorders were identified as predictors of moderate or high work stress. The predictors of risky drinking or probable alcohol dependence were: male; younger than 40 years of age; tobacco use; health problems; teaching applied social sciences; and use of hypnotic medications. The findings could be used to develop strategies for the prevention or reduction of work stress and alcohol consumption amongst university professors.

RESUMO

Background: Workers are exposed to several risks in academic laboratories due to the presence of potentially hazardous substances. The main objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of accident occurrence and associated risk factors among laboratory workers at the scientific laboratories of the public university in Lebanon and the impact of safety measures training and availability. Methods: In this observational study, a survey was conducted for one year in scientific laboratories at faculties of the public university. Results: Among the participants (N = 220), 45.0% have had accidents; the main cause was exposure to chemicals (73.7%) and more specifically by inhalation (45.4%). Females (85.9%) were more exposed to accidents than males. Laboratory workers with a master's degree, a full-time schedule, and more than ten years of experience were significantly more exposed to accidents (p < 0.05). A significant association was found between accident occurrence and training on management of hazardous products (p = 0.044), risks related to workplace (p = 0.030), eyewash and emergency shower (p < 0.001), first aid (p = 0.012), and facial protection availability (p = 0.019). In spite of the lack of safety culture and efficient training on laboratory safety, participants have shown a very good perception regarding safety measures to be applied in case of work accidents. Conclusion: Based on our findings, the prevalence of accident occurrence is elevated among lab workers at the public university. The impact of regular training on laboratory safety preventive measures is of great importance to ensure the efficiency of occupational health and safety in scientific laboratories.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the knowledge and attitude on infant vaccination among a couple of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) staffs in Serdang, Selangor. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving 97 respondents. A cluster sampling technique for the categorization of the faculty in UPM to science-based and non-science-based is used. Then, fishbowl technique was adopted in selecting the faculty from the two categorizations, which consists of 1) science-based: Faculty Biotechnology and Science Biomolecule and Faculty of Science; 2) non-science-based: Faculty of Economics and Management and Faculty of Language and Communication. Consequently, a simple random method was used to choose the respondent based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data on socio-demographic characteristic, knowledge and attitude regarding infant vaccination were collected using a modified and pretested questionnaire. The data then were analyzed using SPSS version 22. RESULTS: Of 97 respondents, 78 (80.4%) had high knowledge, and 49 (50.5%) have moderate attitude regarding infant vaccination. Overall, science-based faculty and non-science-based faculty prevalence of refuse infant vaccination was 2.1%, 6.5%, respectively. There was a significant association between educational level and the knowledge (p < .05, p = .019). However, there was no significant association between socio-demographic and attitude. Other than that,, there was no association between knowledge and attitude among these two different types of faculty (P > .05, p = .256, p = .597). CONCLUSION: Effort are needed for focusing on health education campaign with collaboration between health-care professionals, social media and community to improve their awareness for immunization.

RESUMO

Abstract Since 2002, some Brazilian public universities have started adopting affirmative action for admission in graduate programs. This article explains how affirmative action changed admission processes in graduate processes based on (a) an analysis of the selection notices of graduate programs offered in public universities published until January 2018, (b) documents from the programs, and (c) semi-structured interviews with coordinators of graduate programs. The results show that, in most programs, admission processes did not change based on affirmative action. Some programs recognized the obstacles faced by vulnerable groups in accessing graduate programs and altered their procedures. Based on the institutional change typology of Mahoney and Thelen (2010), the analysis points out that more profound change is due to endogenous and incremental processes. The main factor contributing to the modification of the admission criteria is the program's field of knowledge.

Abstract This study aimed to problematize aspects of the work of professors in relation to gender, assessment policies, and health. For this purpose, a qualitative social investigation was conducted within the aspect of participatory studies and the views of materialist feminism. An analysis of the material was carried out through content analysis, according to the topic, using four main themes: conflicts between professors' work and domestic work; professors' work, motherhood, and guilt; policies for the assessment of professors and gender relations; and the sexual division of labor and teaching. It was possible to perceive just how much the demands of the productive sphere have gone beyond the time of the workday and into the reproductive sphere and the private life of professors, compromising the struggle for health and leading to processes of suffering and illness. The theme of the sexual division of labor in public universities appears to be an important issue that highlights work overload and psychological illness, especially at a time when the teaching profession is becoming increasingly competitive. In conclusion, we believe that there is an imperative need for investments in public policies that can guarantee gender equality in higher education.

In this research, the main goal was analyze whether the curricular proposals of the Licentiate and bachelor's in Physical Education(PE) of public universities in Minas Gerais state that work with gender issues in their synopsis. Using documentary sources, in a quantitative and qualitative study, we searched for the descriptor "gender" in the synopsis and in the names of the subjects. Our results showed a lack of thematic curriculum, a foul on the theme in the subjects directed to sport, being a positive finding in the fact of the leisure disciplines discuss about gender. We concluded that it would be interesting to carry out more research like these in other Brazilian territories to expand the vision of Physical Education in the national scenario. We also point to the urgent demand that must be given to gender issues in society to reduce not only gender oppression, but also all others that surround them.
